Famous for its variety of bird-life and the absence of modern trappings, this
island is perfect for bird watching, swimming, snorkelling... or for
just forgetting that you come from a culture suffering from information
overload.
From the months of May to October, literally millions of feathered creatures
can been seen breeding on or near the beach. Some of the birds - such as the
white, brown or black tern and the bos'n bird - are only found on the islands.
As well as the bird-life, the island has reptilian attractions in the form
of giant land turtles. In October, the turtles lay their eggs along well-hidden
parts of the shore, just as they have done since the time of the dinosaurs.
The star resident is "Esmerelda" - the largest, heaviest and oldest turtle in
the world. Esmerelda (who is actually a "he"!), is approx. 200 years old and
weighs 320 kilos - dimensions which have earned him a place in the
Guinness Book of World Records...
