In the remote wilderness of Damaraland lies Camp Xaragu,
hidden in a valley with a river. The camp is only two kilometres
from the main road C39, between Khorixas and Torra Bay. Here
guests can fully appreciate the peace and incredible landscapes, dominated
by wild mountain chains.
Accommodation:
The camp is embedded in the beautiful surrounding and harmonises
with the nature. It is built from local materials and with the help
of the natives of Damaraland. Camp Xaragu is simple but comfortable.
It consists of ten spacious campsites,
five permanent tents with beds and eight en-suite chalets with open
roof showers.
Each campsite and tent has its own braii (grill), petrol lamps and enough
shade for guests and their cars. The sites are well chosen, so that guests
can enjoy the unspoilt wilderness around them without looking into
a neighbours garden. Two small natural stone buildings with shared
showers and toilets can be found in the centre of the camp. Every
evening shower water is heated over a flame in a small water tank
to ensure a relaxing shower after a hot day.
By the main building is a bar and a small shop, offering
all day necessities like wood, washing powder and lighters suitable
for tenting.
Breakfast and dinner are served on a big table in the restaurant.
In this familiar atmosphere guests get easily in contact with each other
whilst sharing their experiences of the day.
Each evening chef Jolly James and his assistants prepare a very delicious
and quality buffet with a final barbecue show under the stars.
Next to the main building is a swimming pool, a small fish pond and a
garden with various animals, such as suricates, exotic birds, varans and ducks.
Other tame animals like austrich and springbok roam freely
within the camp. Many of them have been wounded or were found and rescued as lonely
babies in the wilderness. After growing up in the camp they are released
again. Some will not accept the wild again and become resident at
the camp, like the baboon Mc Gyver, who could not integrate in
groups anymore. Due to his stormy personality he has his own
area in the camp.
Activities:
The surrounding of Camp Xaragu is ideal for hiking, if requested
a guide will be available. Climbing up the small hills near the camp offers
a spectacular 360° view of Damaraland. Lucky guests may enjoy the
opportunity to see desert elephants passing the camp on their way to
the river. Horse riding by hour or tours for several days can be
arranged. Close to the camp, the following places of interest can be
found: Brandberg, Burnt Mountain, Cape Cross Seal Colony and of
course Damaraland itself. The camp also offers short trips to the Epupa Falls,
Organ Pipes, Petrified Forest, The Quiver Tree, Spitzkoppe and
Twyfelfontein.
