Carana beach is another beach in the north which is very much enjoyed
by both visitors as well as local residents. It is quite popular especially
with the local surfers who come for the big waves in this
area.
In the past there used to be a tourism establishment which operated in the
area but since its closure in the late 1990's no other such development has
taken place on this location. Similarly to Beau Vallon, Carana beach can be
considered stable in terms of sand movement, due to the balanced
accumulation of sand after erosion during the South West monsoon. Again
its sheltered location in between two rock heads on each side helps to
protect the beach from the direct impact of the currents. The fact that
its dunes/berms are well protected by coastal vegetation also means that
erosion by wave action has a lesser effect on Carana beach.
