Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean

Sri Lanka is a tropical country close to the equator. The drop shaped island is located 30 kilometers off the coast of southeast India. The vegetation consists of jungle, grass plains, rice fields, tea plantations, palm forests and untouched rain forest. The national parks offer a diverse variety of plants and species. The south is especially abundant with gem mines.

The temperature and humidity are high throughout the year at an average of 27°C. In the central mountain areas cooler climates prevail with an average temperature of 16°C. The island has two monsoon periods: the south-west-monsoon during May and August and the north-east-monsoon during December and January. The best time for traveling is January through to March. Between May and November the air is usually very humid with heavy rain showers. The water temperature is around 28°C.
