Zanzibar lies about 600 kilometres south of the equator and about 40 kilometres
off the coast of Tanzania. The archipelago consists of the two
main islands of Unguja (Zanzibar) and Pemba as well as about 50 smaller islands.
The lush green islands have been the centre of spice trades during the last century.
Today most of its population lives from tropical farming and fishing. Stone Town,
the historic section of Zanzibar Town, is a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With the exception of a small section in the northwest, the island of Zanzibar is completely
surrounded by coral reef which offers unique diving and snorkelling. At low tide
the entire east coast converts into an endless beach, and in some places
it is even possible to walk out to the edge of the reef.
The driest period is between June and October with temperatures ranging from
23°C to 29°C. Occasional rain showers occur between November and mid-December.
The most rainy season is from March to May.
